WordPress Web Developer Position

Hexxen is currently looking for a WordPress developer to join our creative team. This is a position and requires a firm understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, and WordPress theme development. Applicants must have examples of previous WordPress work (via GitHub or link). Builds using page-builders / theme builders as the primary method of development will not be considered.

Job Responsibilities

As a developer, you will be tasked with the following types of work:

  • Creating websites (in whole and in part) in WordPress from scratch, using Adobe XD designs as a starting point.
  • Creating and modifying WordPress themes and child themes.
  • Creating and modifying WordPress plugins.
  • Working on the back-end of sites to debug issues or add features (example: adding a custom post type or custom field, fixing console errors, fixing server (500) errors, etc.).
  • Working independently through backlog items as well as with a team to complete development projects.
  • Working with development, design, and content teams to ensure project requirements are met.
  • Communicating with clients via phone or email for projects or work requests (either by yourself or with other development team members).

Required Skills

For this position:

  • A strong, working understanding of HTML, SCSS, PHP, and JavaScript.
  • Understanding of WordPress development practices (theme + plugin development) including style / script enqueue, widget creation, shortcode registration, custom post type registration, etc.
  • Must be able to “modularize” common processes into functions as needed (ex: creating a function that grabs the averages of all “reviews” rating information and returns that integer).
  • Working knowledge of common WordPress plugins like Advanced Custom Fields, Contact Form 7, Gravity Forms, etc.
  • Git / GitHub basics. We use version control for all projects and you will be expected to keep branches up-to-date and know how to pull / push changes and make pull requests.
  • Local Environment setup (example: XAMPP, MAMP, WAMP, etc.) as well as how to install WordPress from start AND from a backup (extracting files, installing database, etc).
  • General understanding of best web practices. Example: formatting forms or buttons to be accessible, displaying lazy-loaded images, minimum font sizes, etc.
  • We often use Google’s suite of collaborative tools (Gmail, docs, drive, etc.) so understanding on how to use these is required
  • Ability to follow task management software (We use Monday.com)
  • Experience using Adobe XD (to gather development requirements, export assets, etc.)

Nice Skills To Have

All things being equal, these are the additional skills we would love if an applicant had, but are not required:

  • Knowledge of CLI tools like NPM, Composer, etc.
  • Experience with basic SEO best practices.
  • This is a very interactive role with plenty of room for growth.

Job will require the signing of an NDA (Non-disclosure agreement) to protect Hexxen’s content strategies. This is a full-time position, with compensation dependent upon experience.
