No Rest for the Wicked

The Crucible

The Crucible update is now live! Check out what's been added to No Rest for the Wicked.

The Crucible

Greetings Cerim, we appreciate your patience as it's been a while since our last official communication. We've been heads down on Wicked, but that means we're even more excited today to talk to you about development so far and what's new with our first content update!

When we released Wicked into Early Access, the entire team prioritized bug fixing and other hotfixes for the first month; standard stuff for newly released games. Taking stock of how that first month of hotfixes and patches went, we feel we accomplished quite a bit — Controller Remapping, DLSS/FSR Upscaling, 32:9 support, improvements to game systems like Durability and Inventory, localization fixes/improvements and much more. Since that initial rapid-fire deployment, we've been entering a new phase of development internally.

So in that time, we felt it was the right time to switch from focusing on important, but smaller-scale updates to a style of development where we focus on larger, more game-changing content updates.

This has manifested itself in our first content update for Wicked called "The Crucible."

The Crucible update features a revamped and expanded Cerim Crucible, a new enemy faction known as The Gloam, a new vendor NPC, a new upgrade system, and much more.

So, let's jump in!

All New Cerim Crucible

At the start of our Early Access, the Cerim Crucible was just a glimmer of what we envisioned for it in the long run. Just one of our visions for the Crucible is one that condenses the core gameplay experience of No Rest for the Wicked into a repeatable roguelite dungeon - but with a Moon Studios twist, of course!

So with this update, we've more than tripled the number of randomized chambers within the Crucible, introduced a whole new art theme, added a brand new vendor, and introduced an entirely new gameplay system called Echoes.

One of the biggest features that we always envisioned for the Cerim Crucible but weren't able to ship at launch is this Echoes system. Echoes allow you to customize every run with a variety of buffs and effects, creating a staggering amount of possibilities as you can essentially create a build on top of your build. Thanks to Echoes and the randomization of them, no two runs in the Crucible will ever be alike.

Echos

All enemies inside the Crucible now drop glowing orbs called Traces, which can be used to activate Echoes at any time. The more enemies you kill, the more you can bolster your run with unique effects and conditions.

New Cerim Crucible Vendor | The Seneschal

The Crucible is a dark and dangerous place - but deep underground, there is someone who can help us. An ancient being, called The Seneschal.

The Seneschal

What we mean to it, and who it once was, is a mystery. But it feeds on Gloamseed, which gets dropped throughout the Crucible. The more we progress through the Crucible, the more Gloamseed we can feed to the Seneschal - who will do things for us like sell Fallen Embers and refined resources; Exalt our weapons; and unlock new features within the Crucible in the future.

New Enemy Faction | The Gloam

The Gloam are a brand new group of enemies that can be found inside the Crucible - and in later Updates they will also appear in the overworld as well.

The Gloam are lost souls who became infected by the Pestilence within the deep, dank caves throughout Sacra. Some got lost, trapped underground, or buried alive – but all of them ended up glowing with a kind of corrupt bioluminescence, similar to the algae and fungi that bloom within those same caves.

New Faction: The Gloam

We're excited for you to discover the behaviors of this new unique enemy faction!

In addition, the Cerim Crucible now opens much sooner in your adventure; it can be entered by activating the "Spoken & Unspoken" quest with Elsa, as soon as the player has arrived in Sacrament and completed the first campaign quest.

Because of this, some of you may find that your quest progression for "Spoken & Unspoken" has reset with this Update - never fear, this is intentional! We want everyone to be able to experience the new flow of the Crucible organically, including important tutorials; and the easiest way to do this was to start the quest over from the beginning. But don't worry; your gear, character, and other quest progression should all remain unchanged.

Even with all of this new content, we're still not finished with the Cerim Crucible! In subsequent updates, we plan to make new statues available to unlock in the Atrium, which will lead to more unique challenges, and even some brand new bosses. We're actively working on this additional content even as we release this first Crucible update.

New Features and Content

Exalted Gear

The Seneschal allows Cerim to boost their items in an entirely new way - by upgrading them to the status of Exalted. This is a permanent change that raises stats and improves Enchantments.

Therefore, Cerim who challenge themselves in the trials of the Crucible will earn the chance to gain these rewards that can carry over into the rest of the game - making their items more powerful than ever before.

Extended Regions

Extended Regions

Although most of this Update is focused on the Cerim Crucible, there were a few places where we just couldn't help ourselves. So we've also extended some regions of the overworld, like the Black Trench and the Nameless Pass, so there's even more secrets and surprises for players to seek out and explore in those areas.

New Combat Enhancements | Freeze & Shatter, Rip & Tear

New Combat 1

Combat has also been enhanced with punchier kill effects. Watch enemies explode from fireballs, shatter from an attack after being frozen in ice and smashed to pieces with heavy weapons!

Stray Animals

Stray Animals

We've also added stray animals. You can pet them when the opportunity arises! It makes us happy and we think you will like it too!

Major Performance Updates

There's even more improvements that we just don't have time to get into! So here's a small lightning round of what to expect:

  • CPU performance improvements
  • Smoother area transitions
  • Cinematics polish
  • Memory optimization
  • Hundreds of fixes and improvements!

Steam Deck Verification

Get excited as we tick down the minutes to launch with our Early Access launch trailer.

Launch Information
Though this information is already out in the world, we'd like to share with you the game's launch plans.

When No Rest for the Wicked launches into Early Access on April 18, commencing alongside it is an affiliate program where you can support your favorite streamer or content creator and get the game for a reduced price of $31.99 by using their affiliate links. Supporting a creator will get you the best possible price for the game.

By visiting a participating creator or streamer's channel and clicking on their No Rest for the Wicked affiliate link, it'll take you to the Private Division Store where you'll be able to buy the game on Steam (when your purchase is complete you will receive a Steam Key) at the affiliate price and the creator will receive compensation from Private Division or its affiliates!

Here is a list of just some of the confirmed streamers and creators who're part of the program and who you can support. It's not an exhaustive list, so be sure to check your favorite streamer on April 18 and see if they're participating!

On Steam, the game will be available at a special introductory price of $35.99 USD | £31.95 GBP | €35.99 EUR*. Both will run for a period of two weeks following release until May 2, 2024 at 9am PT.

Regional Pricing
We've seen a lot of questions about regional pricing. We understand that some countries experience economic factors that make a direct conversion from the dollar unfair for folks in those countries. We've instead taken a look at Steam's recommended pricing, as well as a range of recent releases to land at regional prices that are hopefully considerate of the local situation and offer great value for our Early Access content.

See you on the 18th!

*Pricing based on Private Division's SRP. Actual retail price may differ.

Wicked Inside Recap

Missed Wicked Inside? We've got you covered! No Rest for the Wicked launches into Steam Early Access April 18, 2024.

Thank you to everyone who watched as we explored No Rest for the Wicked, and to the folks that gave us their early impressions. If you'd like to watch Wicked Inside, check it out here.

For those who'd like a recap, we've got you covered!

A Story of Politics and Plague
The year is 841 - King Harol is dead. Rumors begin to emerge about the return of a great plague known as the Pestilence. You are a Cerim, a member of an ancient sect devoted to vanquishing the plague. Called to investigate these rumors, you board a merchant ship to the backwater Isola Sacra. While en route, a rebel group known as the Risen seizes the ship - leaving it wrecked as it collides into the island's rocks. Washed up on the shores of Isola Sacra, you wake up naked and unarmed. As you find your bearings, you end up caught between a vast political struggle and a fight for survival.

A Hand-Crafted World
Isola Sacra is a living, breathing world that has been painstakingly hand-crafted. Traverse through vibrant, seamless, interactive environments: if something looks climbable, it is, if an object is too thin to walk over, you may just need to balance your way across. Each step, climb, and jump should be intentional. We've abandoned the traditional point-and-click in favor of a WASD or controller control scheme. Searching every inch may prove fruitful, revealing secret areas and loot.

Sacra is everchanging. Return to previously explored areas to find new threats to tackle and resources to scavenge. Each time you visit a region, a drastically different experience will be waiting.

Play Your Way
No Rest for the Wicked uses a soft class system, meaning priority is on weapons rather than picking a specific class/role. Leveling up earns stat points that you can put into: HP, intelligence, dexterity, strength, and stamina. Stats like intelligence, dexterity, and strength can directly make weapon types more powerful. We want players to be able to create any build imaginable - even ones we haven't thought of!

Devastating Combat
With our animation-driven combat system, attacks should be planned and deliberate. To overcome opponents, watch for telegraphed behaviors and the opportune moment to strike. Parry incoming blows that put enemies into a temporary weakened state. Movement and timing are also important. Your movement speed determines the dodge action and don't fret, all have invincibility frames:

  • For the fast and light on their feet, quickstep out of the way of incoming attacks.
  • For those who go at a balanced, measured speed, dodge roll to evade.
  • For the slow-and-mighty, while more susceptible to attacks due to a slower dodge animation, can counteract by shoulder bashing enemies.

Weapons are unique, no two are alike. Each weapon has its own stance, can have affixes, and can be optimized by various vendors to suit your needs. Imbue them with runes that add additional effects! In combat, weapons are an extension of your body - timing, spacing, weight, and movement must work in harmony.

Rebuild What Has Been Lost
Along your journey you'll come across Sacrament, the capital of Isola Sacra. A war-torn place, but you can help restore it to its former glory. Make the town your own by purchasing property and decorating it to your heart's content. With a range of purchasable properties and a gridless interior design system, create a unique place to call home. Fish on the shores, fell trees, mine ore, and more. These resources can be used to craft new gear, meals, home furniture, or even make improvements to Sacrament.

You are in control of how Sacrament evolves.

Looking Ahead
No Rest for the Wicked enters Steam Early Access on April 18th, 2024.

Here's what to expect as we progress through development:
