    From the author:

My name is Ibrahem Hasan. I’m a Palestinian-American artist based in New York. I made Love Is Why to raise money to purchase laptops for the Brooklyn Democracy Academy. BDA is a transfer high school for over-age and under-credited students in Brownsville, Brooklyn. Earlier this year, the students of BDA lost their beloved principal Dez-Ann Romain to COVID-19. She was 36. I hope to make this year a little easier for these students; I see their potential, and I want to see…

She was 36. I hope to make this year a little easier for these students; I see their potential, and I want to see them win. Working with BDA’s Dean, Doyle LaShawn, we will distribute the laptops to the students. As the school has been shut down due to the pandemic, these laptops are a step towards the accessible education Dez-Ann Romain dedicated herself to.

The book is a 512 page non-linear experimental storytelling piece: A thank you to my childhood mentors, four black gentlemen I met on Maxwell Street, and Malcolm X. The book is the visualization of their teachings, and the conversations I had with them growing up on the South Side of Chicago— It includes my photography and art alongside contributions from photographers, artists, and writers I respect and love. All powered by Black voices.

  • José Parlá: Roots

    Damiani/Bryce Wolkowitz

Grounded in Parlá’s personal first-generation Cuban American immigrant family story and an ever-evolving practice inspired by “elsewhere communities” and their contributions to America, Roots considers the relationship between local and family history and one’s past, present and future. A photograph of Parlá’s grandfather Agustin Parlá, one of Cuba’s first aviators, is the point of departure for the work—the aviator is an important source of inspiration for the artist as he undertakes his own…

Grounded in Parlá’s personal first-generation Cuban American immigrant family story and an ever-evolving practice inspired by “elsewhere communities” and their contributions to America, Roots considers the relationship between local and family history and one’s past, present and future. A photograph of Parlá’s grandfather Agustin Parlá, one of Cuba’s first aviators, is the point of departure for the work—the aviator is an important source of inspiration for the artist as he undertakes his own border crossings, exploring how multicultural environments impact his perceptions of urban space. Published to accompany exhibitions at the National Young Arts Foundation and SCAD Museum of Art, both being something of a homecoming for the Brooklyn-based artist—a SCAD painting alumnus—Roots surveys a recent body of Parlá’s painting and sculpture.

For Parlá's most recent project, Surface Body / Action Space, presented in a collaborative two-part exhibition at Bryce Wolkowitz's Gallery with Mary Boone's Gallery in Chelsea September 12 - October 31, 2015 an exquisitely photographed catalogue for the same occasion has been produced. Parlá creates exuberant paintings and sculptures that historicize the duality of his identity and contextualize his work in Neo-Expressionism and Realism. The artist allegorizes painterly gesture of texture as the body and form of the works, and writing gesture as a performance aspect. Both paintings and sculptures depict political connections between the body as government and its extremities as the people. Parlá's experience, from 1980s Miami, to friendships with legendary artists of the 1970s and 1980s New York scene, adds a potent and personal undercurrent to his painterly engagement with the history of American Abstract Art.
