Sr. Program Manager & Software Engineer at Twitch | Navigating a Nonlinear Path into Tech | Sharing Insights & Lessons Learned Along the Way
In the fast-paced tech world, there's a prevailing view that the key to career advancement and success lies in external networking. However, I argue that internal networking within your own organization is just as critical, if not more so. Here's why: Deep-rooted connections within your organization can open doors to opportunities unseen from the outside. In my time at Twitch, it wasn't my external network that led to a significant career shift into coding; it was the relationships and trust I built internally. By connecting with colleagues and key decision-makers, I could showcase my potential and passion, which led to pivotal opportunities within the company. So, instead of focusing solely on building an external network, invest in internal networking. Cultivate relationships with your colleagues, understand different departmental roles, and align yourself with mentors within your organization. This approach not only fosters a supportive work environment but also accelerates your career growth in ways you might not expect. What's your take on the balance between internal and external networking in your tech career? Have you found one more beneficial than the other? #InternalNetworking • #CareerGrowth • #SoftwareEngineering ––– 🧑💻 Empowering everyday business people to embrace coding. ♻️ Repost if you found this valuable.

While these moments are undoubtedly challenging, they also open doors to new opportunities and paths. Here are a few things to keep in mind during this time: 1. Take Time to Reflect This period is more than just a job search; it’s a chance to reassess your career goals. Reflect on what you truly enjoy, what you’re good at, and where you see yourself growing. 2. Update Your LinkedIn and Resume Your skills and experiences are your greatest assets. Update your LinkedIn and resume to reflect your latest achievements. Highlight projects and roles that align with your future career aspirations. 3. Network, Network, Network The power of networking can’t be overstated. Connect with former colleagues, join industry groups, attend webinars or virtual meetups. Sometimes, the right opportunity comes from a conversation with a peer. 4. Explore Learning Opportunities Use this time to upskill. Whether it’s a new software, a course in project management, or understanding emerging trends in gaming, staying updated makes you a more competitive candidate. 5. Practice Self-Care Job transitions can be stressful. Remember to take care of your mental and physical health. Exercise, hobbies, or simply talking to someone can make a big difference. 6. Stay Open to New Opportunities Sometimes the right opportunity might be in a different industry or a role you hadn’t considered before. Stay open to these possibilities - you never know where they might lead. 7. Believe in Yourself Remember, your value is not defined by your job status. You bring unique skills and experiences to the table. Stay confident and keep pushing forward. To everyone impacted, remember you’re not alone in this journey. The gaming community is robust, supportive, and always evolving. Your next great adventure is just around the corner. #CareerTransition #GamingIndustry #CareerAdvice #Networking #careeradvice #jobseeksers #lookingforjob #engage

This Just In: Play LinkedIn Games How many times have you seen a game and thought to yourself “that’s a waste of my time”? Tens? Hundreds? No judgment, I was once on the same page as you. When NYT Games (Wordle, Connections) started catching on, they seemed like a waste of time. The concept was cool, but I spend my mornings and free time working…not gaming. But then LinkedIn came out with its own games and I thought to myself, “what a waste of time”. LinkedIn was always a platform I used to evolve, make connections, and share advice. And then I realized it. LinkedIn games are a networking hack to keep you on the minds of recruiters and hiring managers. Play games, share scores, and get hired. LinkedIn is doing something right! #games #linkedingames #networking #networkinghack #tech #techrecruiting #techhacks #nadiyahadid
