Admit it. You've impulsively Kickstarted a board game (or 3 in one year, in this writer's case…) based on the stunning artwork & presentation alone. When Jay Cormier, Board Game Designer and Vancouver Film School Game Design Instructor, launched his brand-new game 'Corps of Discovery' on Kickstarter, board game lovers couldn't resist. In fact, within 1 hour of the Kickstarter launch on April 23 the game was fully funded and is now nearly 800% funded! I'll keep this post as succinct as possible; most students ask the same question. Q: How good do I have to be to be hired into a game studio? A: Your work needs to MATCH the quality of the games that studio makes. If your work doesn't match the game screenshots, keep training.

This month's Sprint courses are nearly coming to an end, so let's catch up on what we've been up to! Week 1 of Rami Ismail's 'Setting up an Indie Studio' Sprint focused on the Business Side of Indie Game Development. ✍ We looked into creating a unique identity for our studios and projects. ✍ We then looked into coming up with pillars and values for our studio. ✍ Rami asked everyone to share their strongest association with "sun" (like "heat" or "light"). He noted that no more than 10% of the room ever has the same answer - it highlighted the importance of clear communication and expectations in studios. Our Masterclass for this week was led by George Willard, co-founder of Secret Sauce! He covered publishing games as an indie studio, with tips on pitch decks and securing funding. He also absolutely sped ran the Q&A answering 29 questions in 30 minutes! 👏 🏃♂️ This week's stand out piece of advice: "People have different perspectives, so clear communication and setting expectations are crucial in a studio."

21/30 Today marked the kickoff of our Game Jams in my classes, igniting excitement and creativity among my students. By framing our intense game design challenges as Game Jams, we've not only made the process incredibly enjoyable but also alleviated some of the pressure on the students. Rather than striving for the next AAA title, they're encouraged to flex their creative muscles and craft fun, light-hearted games. In my introductory class, we launched our MakeCode Arcade Game Jam with the theme of "Resonance and Dissonance," a concept central to our first unit. I find this theme particularly compelling as it allows students to draw from their existing knowledge and craft something truly unique. Over the course of approximately 10 classes, or around 10 hours of in-class game development time, students will bring their ideas to life. Meanwhile, my advanced class embarked on a more ambitious journey with a semester-long jam. Tasked with creating games based on their favorite genres, students have approximately 24 in-class hours to develop a demo. What's been particularly inspiring is witnessing how students collaborate and delegate tasks to propel the project forward while maintaining a structured development process. To ensure progress, they've even devised organizational charts, mapping out major milestones and tasks to guide them towards their ultimate goal.

Day 3 of my mini project series brings an exciting evolution to the Memory Game I created yesterday! Building on the foundation of JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, I've introduced new features to enhance gameplay and user experience. Improved Pause Button: The game now has a more responsive pause feature. Players can take a break without losing their progress, making the game more user-friendly. Dynamic Audio Feedback: To make the game more immersive, I've added audio cues. Each button press now produces a distinct sound, and different audio plays for correct and incorrect matches, adding a fun and engaging auditory element to the game. Enhanced Visuals: I've tweaked the CSS to make the game look more polished and appealing. The buttons and game board have subtle animations and transitions to provide a smoother and more interactive experience. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/g6wWgnSd

🎮 Hey everyone! I'm thrilled to introduce my latest project: a fun 2D Snake Game built for two players! 🐍💥 In this game, you and a friend can go head-to-head, each controlling your own snake and the goal is simple: try to grow your snake longer than your opponent's without crashing into each other! 🏆 What sets this game apart? Well, I've incorporated some cool techniques like the Singleton Pattern and Object Pooling for managing all the collectibles. This not only makes the game run smoother but also adds to the excitement! 🚀 While creating this game, I've been diving deep into the basics of Unity game development, mastering concepts like the singleton pattern and object pooling along the way. It's been quite the journey of learning and discovery! 🌟 Github - https://lnkd.in/gkzhq3xE
