RobCo Stealth Module adds an item to your game which you can use to turn invisible, but in turn disables VATS while equipped.

The What, the How and the Why of this mod:
Spoiler:
Show
What does it do?
  • It adds an item to the game you can equip to gain the ability to turn invisible at the push of a button, but comes at the price of disabling normal VATS while equipped.

How does it work?
  • You bind a key of your choosing in the MCM (Mod Control Menu), push the key when the item is equipped, and you turn invisible.
  • The invisibility does not work on a timer, rather it drains your stamina (read: Action Points) to sustain itself. If your AP runs out, the invisibility is halted, revealing you until you turn it of and let your Ap recharge
  • You may, if you wish, enable a setting in the MCM which allows the invisibility to sustain itself beyond the duration of your AP, but at the cost of your health instead. When your AP runs out, your HP will start to be drained in its stead, potentially killing you if you're not careful
  • Alternatively, if you're a Power Armour-user you may take advantage of the Fusion Core present in the PA, letting you use your AP as you want

How do I get it?
In one of two ways:
  • Either you can pick up a mysterious note in the Concord Red Rocket, leading you on a treasure hunt through the Commonwealth, or...
  • You can go take a look around Abernathy Farm for something valuable, who knows, someone may have left a present for you somewhere near the front door...

Why is this mod?
  • Firstly, because I wanted something like this in my game, and I thought it was a fun concept. Sadly, I never found something like this, so I decided to try my hand at making it myself, and thus began my modding journey.
  • Secondly, I got further inspiration from a YouTube video (I sadly can't remember which one it was, sorry) reviewing Fallout 4. It was a while ago, so I can't tell you who made the video.

Why are there two versions?
There aren't, go home, you're drunk. (Old model is now retired)
Good question, imaginary asker, and the reason is because while similar on the surface, they work differently under the hood:
  • At first everything was performed in one script, which meant it was easier for me create the mod and keep track of how everything worked; but, sadly, this wasn't really that nice on performance, and the mod suffered from huge lag when exiting invisibility. Thus in the newest version I scrapped most of the script and instead went over to using nicer methods for the drain.
  • The reason I'm still keeping the old version is because while it is straight up not as good as the newer version, it is more flexible in that you can modify the drain values quick and easy in the MCM, as well as have a few messages pop up warning you that your health is being drained instead of your AP.
I would still recommend the new one, 'tis much better.

Options

Things you can adjust in the MCM in the latest version:
  • Which key you want to bind the invisibility to.
  • Whether the invis drains only your Action Points or if it drains your HP when out of AP.
  • Whether followers (excluding Dogmeat) are affected by your invis
  • Whether you can go invisible while in Power Armour. (Note that the PA-invis only works if you have the item equipped before you enter a suit of Power Armour)
  • Whether you want to eat the cake and have it still, aka re-enable VATS even with the item equipped
  • Whether you want the invis to pause while in different kinds of menus, such as Pause, Dialogue, Trade etc. The PipBoy menu always pauses stealth, but this is due to the fact that the menu becomes nigh impossible to use while invisible, since it turns transparent. You know, if for some reason you want to be invisible while talking to Preston about settlements needing help. I know I would want that
  • Whether you want the stealth to halt while sprinting
  • Whether you want to suffer lower drain while crouching
  • Whether you want to, while in Power Armour, use the PA's Fusion Core as fuel instead of AP, as well as if you want it to be lower while stationary
  • You can enable quest markers in the [Debug] section

Things you can adjust in the MCM in the old versions:
  • The old version is still retired, I said go home now!
  • Which key you want to bind the invisibility to.
  • Whether the invis drains only your Action Points or if it drains your HP when out of AP.
  • How high the drain on AP and HP are (this didn't work in the new version of the mod, was therefore removed)
  • Whether followers (excluding Dogmeat) are affected by your invisibility

Since you can't modify the drain values in the MCM in the new version, if you want to change them you need to manually edit the values using xEdit.
If you want to change them you need to:
  • Open xEdit, select stealth_module.esp and load it
  • Navigate to Spell, and select the drainSpell entry you want to edit
  • Preferably copy the record as overwrite into a new plugin
  • Edit the magnitude of the DrainEffect Magic Effect of your choosing, remember that the value needs to be negative in order to actually drain you
  • I recommend not changing the values too much from their default values, since they either become too small to really do anything, or they may kill you in mere seconds, but it will vary
  • Be extra wary of touching the FC-draining spell, very low values are needed to not deplete them too quickly

If you don't know what xEdit is, I would advise you to look it up, it's a very handy and powerful tool when modding Fallout (and other Bethesda games).

Installation

Show
Install normally using a mod manager, or manually if you prefer that.

Can be placed basically anywhere in your load order, though it does add a few items to the world, which may conflict with other mods.

Uninstallation of mods mid-play through is never encouraged, since it may mess up your save file. Do so at your own risk.

Updating is encouraged on new and/or clean saves, since updates may include large script-changes.

My thanks to the mod authors on the GreslingGames discord server, even if things I tried to do didn't always work out, they were a big help in transforming the mod from the weird and janky state it was in when I first made it, to what is now.
It's by no means perfect, and there are still things I'd want to do, but for now it's at least not at the point where it throws out hundreds of thousands of error messages to the log every time you use the stealth.
