Full Ray Tracing In Black Myth: Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong runs on Unreal Engine 5 and leverages the latest RTX technologies. On PC, Black Myth: Wukong is enhanced with full ray tracing, making it one of the most immersive and technologically advanced titles released to date.

Full ray tracing is a demanding but highly accurate way to render light and its effect on a scene. Also known as Path Tracing, this advanced ray tracing technique is used by visual effects artists to create film and TV graphics that are indistinguishable from reality, but until the arrival of GeForce RTX GPUs with RT Cores, and the AI-powered acceleration of NVIDIA DLSS, full ray tracing in real-time video games was impossible.

In Black Myth: Wukong, full ray tracing increases the fidelity and quality of lighting, reflections and shadows. Reflections on water reflect all surrounding detail. Water caustics add further realism, accurately rendering the refraction and reflection of light. Particles are reflected, making battles more dynamic and exciting. Fully ray-traced lighting ensures lighting indoors and outdoors is pixel perfect, darkening areas where light is occluded or doesn’t reach, and realistically illuminating the world by bouncing light. And in concert with the lighting system, contact hardening and softening fully ray-traced shadows are cast everywhere, rendering the smallest of shadows from leaves and pebbles, and those from geometry-rich buildings, the main character, and the gigantic bosses that must be overcome.

Full Resolution Multi-Bounce Ray-Traced Indirect Lighting

With multi-bounce ray-traced indirect lighting, natural colored lighting bounces up to two times throughout the world of Black Myth: Wukong, creating more realistic indirect lighting and occlusion. Rendering techniques including Screen Space Reflections, Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, and the existing GI solutions were replaced by a single, unified algorithm that delivers more accurate lighting of scenes and objects, making each scene as immersive as possible.

Full Resolution Ray-Traced Reflections

Through the power of ray tracing, reflections more near-perfectly mirror their surroundings, incorporate bounced detail, and are rendered at full resolution, accentuating the world and further heightening immersion. As seen in the comparison below, still puddles offer a mirror like surface of the surrounding area with stunning detail.

Ray-Traced Particle Reflections

Rendering reflections of particle effects from attacks, explosions and fire in a ray-traced game is particularly challenging. Most are semi-transparent, which may cause sorting issues, and particles often also have unique characteristics, making their reflection even more difficult.

To improve quality and immersion, effects often contain large numbers of individual particles, putting immense pressure on performance when using traditional ray tracing methods. But Black Myth: Wukong uses a new technique to render order-independent transparencies for large sprite sets using two-level ray tracing, which efficiently renders the game's particle system in real-time reflections.

This world-first integration dramatically enhances realism, immersion and image quality, and makes combat even more spectacular and exciting, giving GeForce RTX gamers an unprecedented visual experience.

Ray-Traced Caustics

Caustics simulate the real-life effect whereby light rays are reflected and refracted by water, curved surfaces and objects, creating unique patterns of light on nearby surfaces, such as river beds. With ray tracing, the effect can be accurately and realistically recreated, subtly enhancing the realism and immersion of Black Myth: Wukong.

Ray-Traced Shadows

Shadows are a critical visual cue, and ray tracing lends a pleasant richness to the environment with contiguous silhouettes, contact hardening and softening, self-shadowing, and higher levels of detail, free of aliasing. Nearby objects project whole and grounded shadows, while even fine details of distant structures and nestled structures can be resolved, for a much more realistic image. The following image shows softer, more realistic shadows cast by distant overhead objects.

To enhance your gameplay with all of these effects, activate the “Full Ray Tracing” setting in-game, then select “Full Ray Tracing Level” Very High.

If you’re struggling to find a combination of settings that deliver the experience you desire, be sure to load the NVIDIA app, which will include Optimal Playable Settings for Black Myth: Wukong from August 20th, enabling you to attain a smooth 60 FPS with a single click.

Black Myth: Wukong Is Accelerated By DLSS 3

NVIDIA DLSS is our award-winning AI rendering technology that increases graphics performance in games and apps using dedicated Tensor Core AI processors on GeForce RTX GPUs. In the hundreds of released games and apps listed here, all GeForce RTX users can enhance their experience with DLSS Super Resolution, which taps into the power of a deep learning neural network to boost frame rates and generate beautiful, sharp images.

For even faster frame rates, owners of GeForce RTX 40 Series graphics cards and laptops can accelerate performance using NVIDIA DLSS 3 with Frame Generation.

In Black Myth: Wukong, DLSS 3 multiplies performance with full ray tracing enabled and every setting maxed out. That allows owners of the GeForce RTX 4090, the world’s fastest gaming GPU, to hit nearly 100 frames per second in Black Myth: Wukong’s benchmark. Additionally, owners of the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER and GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER can join in on the 4K fun, running at 74 and 66 frames per second, respectively. If you own one of these GPUs, prepare your eyes for a dazzling display of the very best graphics and gameplay.

At 2560x1440, acceleration of frame rates enables even more configurations to experience Black Myth: Wukong with full ray tracing and maxed out visuals. The GeForce 4090 surpasses 120 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER runs at over 90 FPS, the GeForce RTX 4070 Ti SUPER exceeds 80 FPS, and the GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER passes 70 FPS. And the popular GeForce RTX 4070 pops past 60 FPS, giving its many owners a fast, smooth experience in Black Myth: Wukong.

At 1920x1080, which steadfastly remains the most popular gaming resolution, virtually all GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs can surpass 60 FPS with full ray tracing enabled and all other options cranked up, thanks to a DLSS 3 boost. As for the massively popular GeForce RTX 4060, it can get 60 FPS with a few settings tweaks, or with the use of NVIDIA app’s one-click Optimal Settings.

To apply a DLSS Super Resolution mode, drag the “Super Resolution” slider to the left. At level 100, NVIDIA DLAA is enabled, further enhancing image quality. 67 activates DLSS Quality mode, 58 Balanced mode, 50 Performance mode, and 33 Ultra Performance mode.

Our recommendation for all DLSS games is to use Quality mode at 1920x1080 and 2560x1440, and Performance mode at 3840x2160.
