One of the most impressive mods for Euro Truck Simulator 2 is Project Japan, which allows you to have fun on the roads of the Land of the Rising Sun. The authors are preparing to release the next version and have shared the gameplay to make the wait for its release more enjoyable, which you can watch below.

The post with this material quickly went viral - it has already been viewed over 2.1 million times. Player comments, especially from Japan, praise the creators for a high level of realism. This applies not just to the graphic quality (one of them even stated that it took 10 seconds to realize it was a computer-generated image, not reality) but also to the faithful recreation of many small details of Japanese cities by the modders.

At the moment, it isn't known when the new version of Project Japan will be released. The authors assure that they are already finishing work on it, but some elements still require fixes. For now, you can download the previous version, which is 1.0.11.

Project Japan introduces to Euro Truck Simulator 2 a new map that recreates modern Japan. The modification is impressive in scale and quality of execution, in no way inferior to the official expansions.

Project Japan in detail

The first version of the project was released in 2017 and only covered the Hokuriku region. The author began with it because it's situated at the center of the map of Japan. Initially, the work was progressing slowly, gaining momentum in 2019 when other moderators joined the team. Moreover, they began to cooperate with fans involved in the development of Japanese modifications for Cities: Skylines, which allowed for a significant acceleration of the creation of new visual elements.

As the team grew, so did the project's ambitions. Initially, the plan was to recreate Japan on a 1/19 scale. However, this approach proved to be too simplistic and prevented an accurate representation of the road network in the country. So, the creators made the difficult but very necessary decision to redesign almost the entire map from scratch, so that it would be on a 1/9 scale. This variant was found in the stunning version 1.0 of the mod.

Today in version 1.0.1.1, Project Japan knocks you off your feet. The map is huge and extremely detailed. Most elements, such as buildings, cars, or signs, are new. The gameplay was also heavily modified to reflect Japanese traffic rules (including left-hand traffic) and the local economic realities. There are also many easter eggs and hidden items to discover, such as viewpoints or spots for taking photos.
