What is Contra?

Contra is a freeware modification for Command and Conquer Generals: Zero Hour real-time strategy game and one of the first mods for this game. It adds many new units as well as numerous new upgrades, new general's powers and buildings. It also adds new sounds, maps, bug fixes, enhanced graphics, and other effects, as well as three new generals.

Features:

  • Introduced Ranking system, in which certain buildings and units can only be built when a certain general's rank is achieved. Players get awarded for their combat efficiency.
  • 3 New Generals - USA Cybernetic, China Flame and GLA Assault.
  • Introduction of "Super Units". The limit is 1 per player (like hero units). Super units require 5th rank. Each general has a unique super unit.
  • A.I. is greatly enhanced.
  • Many of the original game bugs have been fixed.
  • Focus on PvP and balance as well as stability (fixes to crash and mismatch errors in each new version).
  • Deep variety of gameplay tactics and strategies.
  • Wide choice of units, buildings, special powers and upgrades.

Air Force general depends on speed and precision. He requires skillful control and is heavy on micro management. While being a powerful general the skill and experience required makes him difficult for many beginners to play.

Laser is a versatile general strong in call situations. He is flexible and has units to fill every combat role. As a result he has no weaknesses other than being a specialist at nothing.

Alexis Alexander

Alexis Alexander

Advantage of this general is easy micro and very simple strategy. Almost the same vs. all enemies - build up around enemy until he dies. However, you should not ignore other abilities.

Algrin Ironhand

Algrin "A.I." Ironhand

The generic feature of this general is his mobility, which allows to move an entire army very fast and create numerical superiority at desired areas of the battlefield. His basic strategy is unstoppable maneuvering along enemy base perimeter. If he finds a weak point in defense, he moves there instantly and destroys the most significant targets.

Nuke General must rely on aggression to defend his base. He has no defenses to hide behind while you wait for your nukes to load. The absence of defense structures forces the player to be more active and aggressive. Use your units to carry out counterattacks for defense and support your main attack with super weapons.

"Anvil" Shin Fai

Infantry is a volatile general given to decisive victories or defeats in the early game. As expected, he relies on masses of infantry in the early game, later reinforced by more infantry. In the late game he gains powerful artillery strikes supported by the same infantry.

His strategy is easy to understand, but not as easy to implement: build more tanks and attack. But everything has its details.

Toxin General specializes in area attacks and damage over time. He is especially effective vs mobbed units and hordes. If well played, you will find all of your positions unapproachable for the fields of acid and poison.

Rodall "Demo" Juhziz

He is a versatile and powerful general with demanding micro management needs. Since almost all units are disposable, you must use them with care, directing almost all kamikazes manually. The more assiduously you play - the more complex it becomes for enemy to defend from your endless flows of kamikazes. If you play properly, you can defeat any other general.

While at a glance his units are weak and poorly suited of combat, Stealth General is a deceptively powerful general using infiltration and surprise to his advantage. He has long range sniper units capable of attacking with impunity against units lacking stealth detection. He is a challenging general to play, but has a strong reward for the effort given.

Mahmud al Huchum

Mahmud al Huchum

Assault is a flexible general with flexible units. He requires low micro management and is well suited for most players. While having no spectacular abilities he also has no weaknesses.

Welcome back! We've received some feedback about ModDB activity. You wanted to see more, so here we are to please. We thought it would be great if we complement the news with some in-game screenshots of smaller changes that do not deserve rendering and description as well. Good news is, we have a lot of such content.

If you're an active follower on YouTube and Discord, you might already be familiar with some of the changes we'll present, but some of the work is actually very recent and will be a surprise for everyone.

First off, we have fully redone Inferno Cannon and Howitzer visually. They blend with the rest of units better in terms of visual quality. Also, they both have small differences to represent their armament and the general they belong to. The Inferno Cannons benefit from the Flame Combustion upgrade visually - little compressed fuel barrels appear on the side.

Next up, we've made AIDE cores for Super Weapon general to improve her mobility. It was a big gameplay requirement.

Tank general had a weakness against mortar buggies and big number of cheap units in general (droids are often an exception because of ECM tower's existence). We thought about solutions and so we decided to give him tank bunkers. They can be garrisoned by any rank 1 unit. The emphasis was on Sniper Cannon as the combination with bunker helps eliminate some of its major weak points. A group of sniper cannon bunkers can now keep buggies away. Occupied tank bunkers are also effective vs. big hordes of infantry - get a dragon or a gauss tank in, even sniper cannon. Units can use their abilities such as war master long range mode. Besides protection from damage, tank bunkers grant +15% range. That doesn't mean they are perfect though, as they can be countered by all sorts of enemies if left without care. Normal bunkers are still in his arsenal, so the tank bunkers come extra to fill this balance gap.

As promised, here come the screenshots. Not much talk needed, just see and enjoy.

Hooray! We've given Tanya the unique ability to call in a Little Bird at her location, offering rapid transport to anywhere... anytime. Comes at a little cost of $800 and can be called again when destroyed. But be careful, she might be more vulnerable this way. Pick your tactics wisely, or try your luck.

Toxin Scorpion benefits from the Toxin Shells upgrade visually - a blue or pink (depending on Anthrax level) barrel gets attached.

Our talented FX artist Alexander 17 has done amazing work with particle FX which deserves a show-off.

Lastly, a video demonstration of the already announced upcoming hero unit for Super Weapon futuristic path - the cryo-themed Commando Eira.

I have a major issue: Cannot finish Chalklange of Demolition general with Infantry. The win message wont show up. I really searched the whole map with thousands of concripts, dozens of listening outposts, and hundreds of engineers... if someone can help, let me know... i don't enjoy games often and I loved this mod so much... Hey Dev.
I think that after building nuclear facility it should have bad impact on your tanks and building that when it destroy it explode and damage your troops and your tank and other building explode too and spread radiation even bigger.

And by the way how about make a time in game
Example when is day all USA gets better then afternoon all China gets better then night time all GLA infantry get automatic stealth
And GLA gets better

No. Black and white colors are indistinguishable on the minimap and have housecoloring issues with infantry. Quality mods do not have these colors for that reason. Time of day cannot be changed dynamically in Generals.

Some ideas:

1. Give Stealth's Jammer Station much more vision and detection range. It will make an "oasis of defence" for Stealth. Combo of Jam. Station + Antiradar Turrets + Gun Buggies could be potent.
1.1 Does enemy human player see RPG's rocket trail when RPG shoots from concealed Gun Buggy? Maybe give Stealth's RPG invisible or poorly visible trail in that case? It could be unit's small feature.

2. Looks like players rarely use a pack of 4 Mines/Fuel Tubes/etc. How about make it slightly cheaper?

3. I think new beautiful Little Bird will look cool in GLA arsenal - in a tan color and/or with some weapons.

4. Make 5 rank upgrades/units more expensive.
+ It probably will extend late game;
+ Sometimes players have too much money by the end;
+ It probably will give more time for a losing player.
--- It will ruin balance and maybe not necessary at all.

5. Is it possible to make something like Horde Bonus, e. g. Stealth Bonus for a pack of Demo's Bomb Trucks?

1. Jammer Station feels balanced now at rank 3 according to tests.

2. Traps are situational things that are used more rarely because of their nature. Their cost is not an issue. And actually mines are pretty strong.

3. I don't think little birds fit the GLA.

4. Whether or not a player / players have too much money by the end depends on different factors and increasing the cost of late game units is not a solution. In fact it will cause late game stuff to be ignored more in low money situations.

5. Horde bonus is a hardcoded behavior and cannot be modified to grant abilities such as stealth.

The MARP somewhat reminds me of the UNSC Mammoth from Halo.
Speaking of which, maybe we can take some inspiration from the Mammoth for the next versions of the MARP.
A super heavy siege/anti-air wheeled platform equipped with a huge railgun with direct and indirect fire capability.
It can lob a shell over vast distances designed to break enemy fortifications (The shell arcs over the map in indirect fire mode).
Or use direct fire mode with a flat trajectory to deal with aircraft at long distances or against incoming ground units in a pinch albeit with minimum firing range (Gun sits high on the platform with poor gun depression). Main gun has slow reload.

Also equipped with smaller secondary cannons or missile pods for close-in defense. Maybe we can retain the Tomahawk missiles to complement the main gun?.
It outranges every super unit in the game. Excels at long range combat but a poor brawler at close range. Mobility and armor is similar to the Yan Wang. It can deal with a small force using its secondary weapons but it's game over for it once it gets swarmed by a large force or faces another super unit at close range. Superior mobility must be used to avoid aforementioned scenario.

MARP is newest SU and is just made, and balanced. I see no reason to change this unit and go back at the start just bcs of ideas.

We also have tons of ideas, but unfortunately we dont have so much time to create everything we imagined, especially if you work and then encounter issues with engine limitations and it turns out you wasted your time for nothing.

I'm sorry, I got too excited with my idea that I got caught up writing it. Reading it again, it seems that I made the impression of being overbearing or too demanding. Like a pushy executive in a game studio.

But yeah, I didn't mean to question the idea behind the MARP. I thought my idea was just a refinement of it, but it's still the same fundamentally(almost).

I also modded my own Contra, playing around with the .ini files to "improve" every super unit. Like replacing the Seraph's weapon with a giant laser cannon and a secondary plasma weapon similar to the Terminator. I loved my modifications so much that it got into my head to help the devs with my ideas. I won't be doing it again.
