Factions and communities are one of the new mechanics introduced in Frostpunk 2. These are parties made up of the city's population and forming the council sitting in the town hall. Each faction has a different vision of New London and a separate relationship bar that you must strive to keep high. On this page of the guide we have described how the faction system works and what interactions you can have with groups.

How do factions and communities work?

Factions and Communities are the groups into which your city's population is divided. Each of them by default has a certain number of delegates on the city council, depending on their population. The division between factions and communities is based on the 'radicality' of their views - the political zeitgeist of your city is composed of three axes with two opposing views each (Adaptation/Progress, Equality/Merit, Reason/Tradition). The factions hold views on three axes and are so certain of their views that they usually cannot be convinced by negotiations. Communities have views on only one axis - they are also much larger than factions, so it is easier to negotiate with them and more difficult to radicalize them.

Each group has its own separate relationship bar. They are influenced by many factors - the consistency of views with the current direction of the city, fulfilling or breaking promises and the current situation in the city can increase or decrease relations with particular groups. Low relationship level erodes the trust you need to stay in power and may cause protests. High relations increase trust, trigger rallies where you receive valuable rewards, and enable you to use the special skills of a given faction, which can be very useful.

Factions also have a fervour indicator - three diamonds above the faction icon. It shows the number of particularly radical members of that faction who are ready to remove you from power by violence. Too much fervor leads to conflicts on the streets and increases tensions, which can ultimately plunge the city to complete chaos. You can reduce Fervour by maintaining high Relations with a given faction, using special activities in prison buildings, and asking the community associated with a given faction for help with deradicalization.

What can you do with factions and communities?

You can interact with each group by clicking on its portrait at the bottom of the screen. These interactions can be very useful to you and are divided into several categories, which are:

  1. Trust - these interactions enable you to increase your relationship with a group by gifting them with Heatstamps, making them a promise, or letting them choose the next law up for vote,
  2. Favours - these interactions enable you to collect Heatstamps from a given group (relationship drop, the larger the group the greater the earnings) or force them to give up their Heatstamps with your guard units (higher earnings, trust drop, drastic relationship drop),
  3. Fervour - these interactions enable you to ask the community to reduce the fervour of an associated faction (good relations with the community required),
  4. Council - these interactions enable you to give a faction more seats on the city council, or to condemn them, reducing the number of seats they have and therefore the influence they have on the city's politics.
  5. Special - these interactions are unique to each faction, they can be e.g. shortening ongoing expeditions or receiving free guard units (good relations with the faction are required).
