Last update: 31 March 2022

On this page of the Ghostwire Tokyo guide, you can find complete information about combat and stealth. You will learn, e.g. how to attack opponents, how to defend yourself against the Visitors' attacks, how to sneak and avoid fights, and how to eliminate enemies with stealth attacks.

Weaving (powers) and improving them

In Ghostwire Tokyo, you mainly use supernatural powers called weaving to attack enemies - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

In Ghostwire Tokyo, you mainly use supernatural powers called weaving to attack enemies. There are three types and each represents a different element:

  1. Wind weaving is available from the beginning of the game. The attacks are quick, but also the weakest.
  2. Fire Weaving is unlocked in A Maze of Death main quest. It allows you to shoot single fireballs that deal high damage.
  3. Water Weaving also becomes available in A Maze of Death main quest. It is most effective at a short distance.

Each of the powers have normal and charge attacks (holdi down the attack button). The latter allow you to deal more damage, but you will need to wait a few seconds. They are useful if your opponents are not very close to Akito and you have time to charge them.

Each Weaving uses a different type of energy - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

Each Weaving uses a different type of energy. Therefore, you should switch between them frequently by using the radial menu. This way you will avoid running out of energy for a particular power. You can replenish the energy with the ether dropped by defeated opponents and by destroying levitating objects (example in the picture).

You can permanently increase the maximum energy for individual powers. You do this by finding Jizo statues - one of the types of secrets. Praying at each statue will increase the energy limit for one of the powers. Thanks to this, you can use that power longer in a fight before running out of it.

You can upgrade your powers by unlocking related skills. Thanks to this, you will be able to deal more damage, but also e.g. shoot more projectiles or hit more targets at the same time. This topic is discussed in more detail on the Character progression page.

Visitor cores and grabbing them

The way you fight enemies seems like in other games - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

The way you fight enemies seems like in other games. However, to defeat enemies, you have to expose their core. This happens after a given Visitor takes enough damage. This allows you to capture the Visitor's core and tear it out - you can do it from a distance or by running to a weakened opponent.

Unfortunately, there are two problems with grabbing the cores:

  1. The process may be aborted. This will happen if you are attacked (e.g. with a projectile) while ripping out a core. Try to stand in such places that will help you reduce the risk. You can also purchase abilities that will facilitate the process of tearing the core from the Visitor's body.
  2. Weakened Visitor can regenerate. This can happen if you don't rip out the core quickly enough. The enemy will not return to 100% of their strength, but it will still have to be weakened again. We suggest that you always focus on eliminating the currently attacked Visitor. The exception is when using area attacks (e.g. charged Fire Weaving attacks) to eliminate several enemies at the same time.

Bow and talismans

The bow is the only conventional weapon in the game - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

The bow is the only conventional weapon in the game. You will unlock it quite early in the game - during your first visit to KK's apartment during the Clearing the Fog main quest. You also need to have arrows - you can find them as loot and buy them from traders. You can also increase the limit of arrows carried by unlocking related abilities.

The great advantage of the bow is its versatility. You can use it during fights, but also for stealth attacks. As long as the target is not moving, always try to aim at its head to increase the chances of killing a Visitor with a single arrow. As for more distant targets, you will need to aim a little higher, as the arrows do not fly in a straight line.

During the campaign, you will also unlock access to several different types of talismans - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

During the campaign, you will also unlock access to several different types of talismans. They are treated as consumable items, so you should plan carefully where to use them so as not to waste them. You can replenish the talismans by visiting the merchants.

The most useful type is the Stun Talismans. Thanks to them, you can temporarily stop the Visitors in their place and, additionally, approach the stunned enemies from behind to perform Quick Purge. This is the perfect way to stop the elite Visitors.

Another interesting type is the Exposure Talisman. They can help you reveal enemy cores. Again, you can gain the most by using talismans on unique Visitors who, by default, require a large number of normal attacks to reveal their cores.

Visitors' attacks and avoiding them

Each enemy type is unique in its own way, but in general, Visitors can attack in two ways - with melee and ranged attacks - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

Each enemy type is unique in its own way, but in general, Visitors can attack in two ways - with melee and ranged attacks. During the game, you will encounter enemies that use only one type of attack, but also those that are versatile - they are more dangerous, because, for example, moving away from them will not make you safe.

Some of the Visitors can also defend themselves against the attacks, e.g. by using a large umbrella. You can try to make it difficult for them (e.g. destroying said umbrella with charged attacks) or wait for them to stop using the cover.

You can avoid taking damage by - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

You can avoid taking damage by:

  1. Moving away from the Visitors - this is universal when fighting melee-oriented enemies. The game has unlimited sprint.
  2. Hiding behind obstacles - it can help you avoid ranged fire, but be aware that enemy missiles can travel through the ether (levitating objects regenerating energy).
  3. Blocking - there are "regular" and "perfect" blocks, where you have to press the block button at the perfect moment. This is risky, but it may negate any damage.

Healing during fights

The topic of regenerating lost health points is described in more detail on the Healing - how to recover - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

The topic of regenerating lost health points is described in more detail on the Healing - how to recover?, but it is worth remembering a few things:

  1. Watch Akito's health bar - You should heal yourself after it turns yellow, because from then on it will be easy to die or be on the verge of dying after one stronger attack.
  2. Consume food and drinks from your inventory - You can have 3 different items ready. What's more, there is spectral food that, in addition to restoring HP, also gives you a temporary bonus to statistics (e.g. easier perfect blocks, enhanced defense). You can find food while exploring the world or buy it.
  3. Extracting cores can restore a small amount of health - You can increase this effect by purchasing related abilities.

Elite and regular opponents

The vast majority of fights are against "minor" Visitors, who may pose a greater threat only when they appear in a larger group - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

The vast majority of fights are against "minor" Visitors, who may pose a greater threat only when they appear in a larger group. However, there are a few battles where you will also face various types of elite Visitors.

When fighting stronger Visitors, try to learn about their unique attacks - they can, for example, try to knock Akito to the ground, hit the hero with a charge, or use area attacks that are difficult to avoid. Learn to avoid these types of attacks and stay out of their reach. Also, do not leave them for eliminating until the end, because they can be a nuisance when fighting the weaker Visitors. It is worth attacking elite enemies despite the threat, because one such enemy can usually give you several hundred XP.

Sneaking and avoiding fights

Ghostwire Tokyo has a stealth mechanic and it can be very helpful - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

Ghostwire Tokyo has a stealth mechanic and it can be very helpful. You can use it not only to completely avoid unwanted confrontations (especially in quests where Akito is temporarily powerless), but also to plan surprise attacks.

You can start sneaking by pressing the crouch button. By default, it is slow, but the skill tree has abilities that allow you to move faster while sneaking. Buying them is highly recommended - you'll be able to surprise or avoid enemies more easily.

Here are some additional stealth tips - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

Here are some additional stealth tips:

  1. Markers informing about the level of alerting enemies will appear on the screen - this happens after Akito enters their line of sight. The yellow and orange colors mean that the opponent can come your way. Red color means an alarm - you can then start fighting or escaping to lose the pursuit (usually it is not difficult).
  2. Spectral vision helps a lot in locating enemies - scanning the area can mark them even through walls. This is a great way to safely avoid them and sneak up from behind.

Stealth attacks

You can sneak not only to completely avoid enemies, but also to perform stealth attacks - Ghostwire Tokyo: Combat and stealth - Basics - Ghostwire Tokyo Guide

You can sneak not only to completely avoid enemies, but also to perform stealth attacks. This can be done in two ways:

  1. Quick Purge - They are stealth attacks. You can use this attack after you get behind a Visitor's back. In most cases, this will kill that enemy immediately. Only some elite enemies can survive such an attack (although they will still take considerable damage). Quick Purge is also available after stunning a Visitor with a talisman - that enemy will be defenceless for a few seconds.
  2. Bow attacks - As we mentioned in one of the previous points, aim at the heads of enemies to deal as much damage as possible. This will increase the chances that the hit will kill that opponent instantly, without alerting the entire area.
