Jobs are small exploring missions you can activate at will if you don't have the required resources. They make it easier to reach the areas where the necessary resources are.

You may want to start a Job if:

  1. You're using a workbench and you run out of resources needed to level up an item (example pictured above).
  2. You're trading with a merchant and you don't have the resources needed to purchase what you want.

If you need unique components dropped only by specific machines, make sure to check the catalogue on how to get them. Some components only drop if you fulfill a specific requirement, such as detaching it from the machine with an accurate shot. Defeating the machine without doing so may destroy the component, forcing you to find another machine of the same species to try again.

Unknown Sites in Jobs

When you create a new Job, an Unknown Site message may appear in the Job description - Horizon Forbidden West: What are jobs and how to activate them? - World and game information - Horizon Forbidden West Guide

When you create a new Job, an Unknown Site message may appear in the Job description. Because of that, you may not be able to obtain the component you are looking for, as the game will not be able to guide you to that specific machine site. You must make enough progress in the main storyline to discover new types of machines and their sites. Either leave that Job as active or cancel it.
