Beginner's Guide - Dictionary League of Legends Guide

This dictionary explains phrases and abbreviations used further in the guide and in the game itself. Knowing them will considerably improve team communication and, essentially, make it faster. In the heat of battle there rarely is time to construct elaborate sentences, and that's when the abbreviations really come in handy. For your convenience, the dictionary entries are sorted in alphabetical order.

  1. AA (Auto Attack) - Right clicking on the target will order your character to automatically attack it.
  2. Ace - Means that the entire enemy team is dead. This is a good moment to capture an objective: kill the Dragon or Baron, or take out towers or inhibitors.
  3. AD (Attack Damage) - Physical damage of a character's standard attack.
  4. ADC - One of the roles in League of Legends that focuses on shooting at enemies from far away, e.g. Lucian and Kai'sa.
  5. AoE (Area of Effect) - The radius of some abilities (e.g. Malphite's Unstoppable Force, Riven' Ki Burst).
  6. AP (Ability Power) - Power of magical abilities. AP is mainly used by Mages.
  7. AS (Attak Speed) - Speed of a champion's attack.
  8. Aura - An additional effect of abilities; often affects other members of the team, e.g. an aura improving AS, MR, etc.
  9. Bot - The bottom lane on the map.
  10. Bruiser - A character class that deals massive damage at a cost of reduced mobility.
  11. Brush - Tall grassy terrains located in various places on maps.
  12. Buff - A bonus to a champion's statistics, which lasts for a certain amount of time, e.g. Blue Buff from killing the Golem.
  13. Build - A customizable items set and abilities of a character.
  14. Burst - Dealing huge amount of damage in a short time.
  15. Camp - Camp in a jungle, e.g. Wolves, Raptors.
  16. Carry - A character who in mid- and late-game "carries" the team through the battle. There are AD and AP Carries in the game, AD Carries being distance fighters (e.g. Vayne, Caitlyn etc.) and AP Carries - mages (Ahri, Twisted Fate etc.).
  17. CC (Crowd Control) - The term includes all effects that handicap the control over another champion, such as fear, stun, slow, airborne, etc.
  18. CD (Cooldown) - Time needed to "cool down", or regenerate an ability.
  19. CDR (Cooldown Reduction) - Reduction of a cooldown achieved through a proper choice of runes, skills or items.
  20. champion - A playable character.
  21. Creep - Refers to Minions, i.e. allied creatures walking down each lane.
  22. CS (Creep Score) - The number of Minions and neutral creatures killed by a character during the current game. The meter is at the top-right corner of the screen.
  23. DC (Disconnect) - When a player disconnets he leaves the current game.
  24. Dive - An aggressive tactic where you kill an enemy who is being shot by the turrets, usually performed with other players from your team.
  25. DoT (Damage Over Time) - Damage dealt over time; an example of an ability with such an effect is Ignite, which deals 70-410 of damage in 5 seconds.
  26. Executed - If a player is killed by a tower or a monster, etc., i.e. without the enemy's involvement, he is executed. When that happens, no one gets the gold for the killing.
  27. Farm - Farming means collecting gold through killing minions.
  28. Feeder - A term for a player who "feeds" the enemy team by constantly getting killed. A connected term is Fed, which describes a player who has a lot of kills.
  29. Focus - Focusing on a specific enemy, e.g. on hostile ADC.
  30. Gank - Help from a teammate from another lane. When you are asking someone to attack an enemy on your lane, you're asking for a gank.
  31. Leaver - A player who left a game in-progress and has not reconnected.
  32. Harass - A constant harassment of an enemy with attacks, which are aimed at disrupting their morale and reducing their health bar.
  33. IAS (Inreased Attack Speed) - Increased attack speed through the right choice of runes, skills, and items.
  34. IP (Influence Points) - Points given to a player after a finished game (whether won or lost) which can be spent on new champions, runes, etc.
  35. Invade - A situation where the opposing team captures your Jungler's camps.
  36. Jungler - One of the roles in League of Legends that focuses on cleaning camps in the jungles and helping other lanes.
  37. KS (Kill Steal) - A situation when someone purposefully (or accidently) delivers the final blow to an enemy who was beeing attacked by a teammate, and conequently pockets the gold.
  38. Lane - One of three alleys on the map. Along its sides there are Turrets.
  39. Last Hit - The final blow dealt to a minion or a neutral creature.
  40. Leash - A Jungler's helper who focuses on the first camp.
  41. MIA (Miss in Action) - Means that an enemy is no longer visible on a lane.
  42. MID - The mid lane on the map.
  43. MR (Magic Resist) - Resistance to magic damage.
  44. MS (Movement Speed) - A champion's movement speed.
  45. OP (Overpowered) - A term for charactes who are much more powerful than others and need to be rebalanced by the game's developer.
  46. Passive - Passive ability of a champion or an item.
  47. Poke - Attacking enemies with long-range abilities.
  48. Push/Shove - "Pushing" minions towards enemy turrets.
  49. Root - A negative effect which immobilizes a champion (e.g. Zyra's Grasping Roots)
  50. RP (Riot Points) - The in-game currency purchased with real money. Can be used to buy champions, Rune Pages, character skins, etc.
  51. Silence - A negative effect which disables all champion's abilities and silences the target. (e.g. Soraka's Infuse).
  52. Skillshot - An ability which requires some skill from players, because it is manually aimed (e.g. Nidalee's Javelin Toss).
  53. Skin - An additional skin for a champion, which can be bought with RP.
  54. Split push - A situation when one enemy tries to push the lane while the rest of the team is distracting the enemies.
  55. SS - Abbreviation for "stay safe", which practically means the same as MIA.
  56. Stack - This is about stacking up several effects or statistics (e.g. every kill with The Bloodsucker gives 1 AD and further getting the bonus means stacking).
  57. Stun - A state in which a character cannot move or perform any actions (e.g. Taric's Dazzle).
  58. Support - A term for champions who support their team with helpful effects: auras, healing, etc. (exemplary Supports are Taric, Thresh, Janna, etc.).
  59. Suppresion - A negative effect which disables champion's abilities (e.g. Fiddlesticks' Terrify).
  60. Tank - A champion whose main task is to attract enemy attacks, receive damage, and distract opponents, so the rest of the team could attack freely.
  61. TOP - The top lane on the map.
  62. TP - Teleport.
  63. Ult - The Ultimate, which is champion's last ability; customarily under R button.
  64. Ward/Warding - A Sight Ward reveals the Fog of War. "Warding" means setting Wards at different places on the map, thus expanding the range of sight.
