Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells Songs of Conquest guide, tips

From this Songs of Conquest game guide page, you will learn all about wielders and spells - inventory, character sheet.

Last update: 22 May 2024

From this page of our Songs of Conquest guide you will learn all the most important information about Wielders - characters that lead your armies into battle. Among the topics, we discuss Wielder Sheets, inventory, builds, how magic works and how Essences are involved in spellcasting.

The most important information about Wielders

1 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. Wielders is the name that the game gives to controllable heroes who travel the map accompanied by armies. They work on the similar principle as, for example, Heroes from Heroes of Might & Magic series.
  2. Each Wielder is characterized by several factors such as attributes, experience level, inventory, and Unit Slots where you can place military units. This hero is limited by his sight range and Movement points and in each turn can only move by a certain amount of fields.
  3. Wielders do not take an active part in battles. Their role on the battlefield is limited to casting spells (more on them in the next subsection). Moreover, every Wielder provides passive bonuses to troops led by him.
  4. Usually, scenarios begin with only one Wielder, but you can recruit more of them - for more on the topic, visit How to increase number of wielders? page of our guide. Each of the recruited Wielders is treated as a separate entity and you order them to move separately.
2 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. After a Wielder levels up, you can choose 1 ability to learn/upgrade from 3 available. The list may include a completely new skill or an upgrade to an already owned ability that will increase its power. At levels 8, 16, 24, etc. you can choose a Power, which are more powerful than skills. The mechanism of developing heroes and leveling up is described in detail on Experience levels of heroes page of our guide.
  2. Wielders can be killed and this will happen if you've lost your entire army in a battle. We describe the topic of resurrecting fallen Wielders in detail in How to resurrect a Wielder? page of our guide. However, resurrection is not always possible and in some scenarios, death of the given hero may mean game over.

Magic, Essences and spellcasting

3 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. Songs of Conquest features a unique spell system. Your Wielders do not learn new spells when levelling up. All spells are available for using at the very beginning of a match/scenario. The only limitation coming into play when attempting to use magic are Essences, which can be treated as mana.
  2. The spellbook of the given Wielder can be accessed by clicking on his portrait (upper-left corner) and pressing V. It should look like the one we show in the screenshot above.
  3. On the left we have a hotbar where you can optionally put the favorite spells to have quick access to them. The checkmark underneath it means during combat the bar will automatically be filled with the most powerful spells you can cast (based on your essence level). You can disable this feature though.
  4. The center of the screen is taken by the list of spells and they are divided according to the category of Essence used in spellcasting. Categories are Order, Chaos, Destruction, Creation, and Arcana.
  5. On the right side of the screen, there are spells that require using two types of Essences to cast (e.g. 3 Order Essence and 3 Creation Essence).
During a battle, there is no artificial limitation on the number of spells you can cast - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide

During a battle, there is no artificial limitation on the number of spells you can cast. The only limitation is the current supply of Essences. Pay attention to:

  1. Essence orbs next to the Wielder's portrait - they inform how many Essence of the given category you have.
  2. List of spells - they appear at the left side of the screen and these are spells from the hotbar or recommendation. You can also bring up the spellbook with all your spells - click on the scroll icon.
4 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. At any moment, you can point the mouse to an Essence orb to learn of all current bonuses provided by them - an example showing Order Essence on the attached screenshot.
Specialization of the Wielder may provide a permanent bonus to one of more categories of Essences - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide

Specialization of the Wielder may provide a permanent bonus to one of more categories of Essences. There are different ways of obtaining Essences:

  1. Having military units in the retinue - every unit (not individual soldiers) generates Essence at the beginning of its turn, and how much and which one you can check in in the upper right corner of the draft sheet. In the example from the screenshot, you can see that the given unit generates 1 Order Essence.
  2. Equipping artifacts - among their properties, there may be one that adds to the chosen Essence. The bonus lasts until the artifact is removed from the active inventory slot.
5 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. Visiting Beacons of Power on the map - when interacted, they can provide a temporary bonus to one or more Essences. The example in the screenshot shows that the provided Essence bonus will last one battle. After it elapses, you can return to the same location and receive another bonus.
  2. Capturing buildings on the map - thanks to them, you can receive a permanent bonus to Essences, but there is a risk of losing the bonus if enemy Wielders take over the building.
Additional note - Essence received from units is allocated at the beginning of their turns during the battle, but all remaining sources provide Essences at the beginning of the fight and at the beginning of every round, which means after all units have completed their turns - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. Learning skills - some of them may increase the given category of Essence permanently (Creation in the example from the screenshot) You can aim to specialize in one field or learn skills related to different Essences.
  2. Researching technologies - this method is costly and requires a related building, but this is a permanent way of getting Essences.

Additional note - Essence received from units is allocated at the beginning of their turns during the battle, but all remaining sources provide Essences at the beginning of the fight and at the beginning of every round, which means after all units have completed their turns.

Inventory

Additional tip - when playing the story campaign, before concluding every mission, you should transfer all valuable artifacts to your main Wielder - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. There are artifacts to be found in the world that your Wielders can equip. You can bring up the inventory window by pressing C or by double-clicking on the Wielder's portrait. The inventory has limited capacity - after it is full, you need to sell, drop, or transfer to another Wielder the unneeded items.
  2. Artifacts can be equipped automatically (an option in the game options - the game will automatically equip better equipment) or manually. They provide various bonuses to statistics, such as increased attack power, additional Movement points, or bonuses that are not related to combat.
  3. The rarity of artifacts is recognized by their colors. The most valuable artifacts are purple and orange, followed by blue, and finally green and grey for the common ones. You should additionally juggle artifacts so the equipped bonus helps against the currently attacked enemy. For example, after encountering an opponent with a lot of ranged units, consider equipping an artifact that increases resistance to ranged attacks.
  4. You can see how much space for new artifacts you have by bringing up the inventory window. You can equip various clothing, weapons, or talismans. For weapons, you have a choice between two-handed weapons or equipping a one-handed weapon and a shield in separate slots.

Additional tip - when playing the story campaign, before concluding every mission, you should transfer all valuable artifacts to your main Wielder. This way, they will be taken over to the new scenario. For more information on the story campaign, visit Campaign mode page of our guide.

Wielder Sheet

6 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. In the same window as the inventory, you can also view the Wielder Sheet with the most important statistics characterizing the hero.
  2. In the upper left corner, you can look up the attribute distribution of the hero. The attributes add bonuses to resistances of the units led by the Wielder. Below, you can view Wielder's specialization and bonuses received for it.
7 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. In the lower-left corner you can see tabs showing what Modifiers your units have active.
  2. The first tab shows a summary of bonuses awarded from all sources, the second shows only temporary ones, while the third one informs of bonuses provided by Wielder's equipped item.
8 - Songs of Conquest: Wielders and spells - Military - Songs of Conquest Guide
  1. On the right side of the screen, you can view current skills that the Wielder can use. If you point the cursor on the individual ones, you can learn more about them.
  2. At the bottom of the screen, you can view your unlocked Powers.
