Monthly Unreal Game Challenges update! I'll need some time to to improve the base Unreal project to an acceptable quality approaching AAA that feels good to play. Right now there's just a few things hindering that. This means Monthly Challenges will come online early August! This gives me time to upgrade the Unreal 5 project, better understand how it's working, and gather/create resources to explain things for you so everyone can dive in. For those that don't know yet. Monthly Challenges will be run through the GameDevSG Discord, please join that! Also, you can install Unreal 5.4 and start tinkering now. I'll gather good tutorials on how to get started, but I don't have time yet for that. Challenges will be setup so you can pick off something that is specific to your discipline, and use the community to help you along when you get stuck. The idea is to overall learn how to implement and iterate better on your work and have something more relevant for employers that is shown in engine inside of a fully working game. Stay tuned. 🎮 Exploring Unreal Engine 5: My First FPS Shooter Game 🚀 I'm excited to share a project I've been working on while learning Unreal Engine 5—a first-person shooter game! This game has been a great learning experience, even though the environment isn't fully polished due to hardware limitations. The project ended up being around 60GB, which my PC struggled to handle, but the core gameplay is fully functional. One of the coolest features is the destructible environment, where obstacles crumble when hit by the player's gun. This project has taught me a lot about game mechanics, optimization, and the powerful capabilities of Unreal Engine 5. 🎉 Exciting Update 🎉 It’s been a year since the Early Access release of The Night Shift on Steam, originally built in the Unity Engine as my final project at SAE University College Aus. Early reviews highlighted performance issues, which led me to rethink and rebuild the game. Late last year, I took on the challenge of recreating The Night Shift in Unreal Engine. Within four months, I developed a vertical slice that represents the future vision of the game. By March 2024, I moved the Unity version to Itch.io and updated the Steam version with a Unreal vertical slice, now priced at US$7. This week marks a major milestone: I've launched the official The Night Shift website and released a demo featuring the first two levels of the game! 🎮 This demo provides players a taste of what’s in store and helps potential customers see what they can expect from the Early Access version. I’m incredibly grateful for the feedback received since March — from friends, family, and especially players. Your insights have been invaluable in refining and improving the gameplay experience.
