Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice Sekiro guide, walkthrough

Last update: 26 March 2019

This chapter focuses on death and its consequences in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Read it to learn what will happen if you die too often, and how does the reviving work in this game.

Death

Dont worry if you are dying a lot - this will keep happening until you increase your level. - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough
Don't worry if you are dying a lot - this will keep happening until you increase your level.

Death is part of Sekiro's gameplay. Your character dies when you lose all your health (and don't use the option to revive). When you die:

  1. You can revive once or twice (more information in this chapter),
  2. Move back to the nearest checkpoint (Sculptor's Idol),
  3. Lose a portion of XP and almost a half of gold - excluding purses since they are items (that is why you should stack them up and don't open until you want to make a purchase),
  4. The percentage value for Unseen Aid gets reduced, Dragonrot spreads throughout the world (after a few or a dozen of deaths).

Reviving

Every time you die, you get a chance to Revive. You have about 10 seconds to choose this option. If you don't use it, you will die. Reviving doesn't cost you anything. You get up in the place where you fell, but you only have half of your health. You can Revive twice per "session" - use Fast Travel or Rest at a Sculptor's Idol to restore Revives. Remember, Fast Travel and Rest brings enemies back to life.

There are two indicators above your health bar - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough

There are two indicators above your health bar. The one on the right is visible when you still have a Revive left. The second icon allows you to revive but on different conditions:

  1. You need to wait until you are able to revive again - you can't revive, die and then revive again. You need to wait a certain amount of time to be able to do it again. After reviving, the game will display a black bar crossing out the purple icons - you can only revive after it disappears.
  2. The second Revive restores after you play the game for a bit, usually by eliminating enemies. When you use Revive, that icon will turn black. Keep defeating enemies to fill it up. When it gets full, you will be able to use Revive again (the rules are the same as above).

Unseen Aid

Unseen Aid appears when you dont suffer any consequences upon death - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough

Unseen Aid appears when you don't suffer any consequences upon death. This mechanic is random - you can check your current level of Unseen Aid by interacting with a Sculptor's Idol. The default value is 30%. Consecutive deaths will reduce this value.

Use Dragons Blood Droplet to restore Unseen Aid to its default value - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough

Use Dragon's Blood Droplet to restore Unseen Aid to its default value. This item is rather rare - you can find it during exploration or purchase from certain merchants (it costs 180 sen).

We strongly advise you to check the other pages of Sekiro's guide dedicated to Unseen Aid and Sculptor's Idol. Learn also how to avoid Dragonrot disease spread.

Dragonrot

Dragonrot starts spreading after you die several times - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough

Dragonrot starts spreading after you die several times. It will keep affecting more and more NPCs, lowering Unseen Aid. Unseen Aid is a value that determines your chance of avoiding death penalties (losing money, XP and increasing Dragonrot). You can check the current Unseen Aid percentage at a Sculptor's Idol.

Bundled Jizo Statue - restoring a node of Resurrective Power

Bundled Jizo Statue. - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough
Bundled Jizo Statue.

Use Bundled Jizo Statue to restore "the second resurrection" faster - the one that is available after defeating a specific number of enemies (the left icon above the health bar). This is a rare item - you can find it during exploration or purchase from a merchant. If you are missing a few enemies to restore the resurrection icon and you want to keep fighting/exploring, use Bundled Jizo Statue to restore that icon immediately. This item is worth a lot so use it only in critical moments (e.g. when you are close to your destination and you don't want to go back to Rest, or when you are fighting with a boss and you need another resurrection to win).

Bite Down

Bite Down is a rather specific item - Death and consequences in Sekiro Shadows Die Twice - Basics - Sekiro Guide and Walkthrough

Bite Down is a rather specific item. It is useful in boss fights when you need to deal a few more strikes to win. Consume Bite Down, and Sekiro will die. However, this unlocks another resurrection but you only get one (and you lose your health). This item is rare so use it only when you are facing a challenging opponent.
