The Nameless King Dark Souls III Guide

Last update: 01 June 2016

It is necessary that you obtain a good shield before the battle. It can come in handy in situations in which all tricks fail. The boss is highly aggressive and he keeps attacking throughout the entire time, but it is possible to block the majority of his attacks with the shield, which requires quite a lot of energy. Apart from that, you will do with decent resistance to lightning, because this is the type of attack that The Nameless King is using. Also, you should ensure yourself with a decent amount of energy, by disposing of unnecessary equipment, because mobility is key to winning this battle. Finally, in the first phase of the battle,, it should be much easier to hit the dragon that the boss is riding, if only you are wielding a sufficiently big weapon.

Once the boss starts hurling lightning bolts at you, lock the camera on him, which is going to make it easier for you to dodge at the right moment. - The Nameless King - Bosses - Dark Souls III Game Guide & Walkthrough
Once the boss starts hurling lightning bolts at you, lock the camera on him, which is going to make it easier for you to dodge at the right moment.

Right after you enter the arena, Stormdrake arrives and he is your first opponent. In general, the drake is walking on clouds but, if you walk too far away, he rises up into the air and attacks you with a fireball that is nearly impossible to dodge and deals immense damage. For this reason, try to remain close to Stormdrake and keep him in front of your eyes for the majority of time. As soon as he rises into the air, try to spring up in the direction in which his head is turned (sometimes, it is impossible due to the problems with locking on and camerawork, which is why you should try not to encourage the opponent to attack this way and stay as close as possible. This should make him use other attacks. The Nameless King will also be trying to hit you and his attacks are harmonized with the drake's - while he is flying around, prepare yourself for lightning bolts hurled your way (it is a good idea to lock the camera on the boss, which makes it easier for you to dodge the attacks), and the drake's diving attack combined with a powerful spear thrust of the Nameless King. This one and the previously mentioned fire attack are the most dangerous ones.

When the drake belches fire, you can stand by on the side and attack. - The Nameless King - Bosses - Dark Souls III Game Guide & Walkthrough
When the drake belches fire, you can stand by on the side and attack.

You have to wait for the short pauses between individual attacks, such as spear thrust of the Nameless King and the drake's fire breathing ("from right to left"). The drake then bends his head which creates an opportunity to attack (either the head or the neck). These are the most vulnerable body parts, by the drake usually keeps them above the ground and lowers them only while attacking. Therefore, you have to watch out and seize any opportunity to strike at the vulnerable parts. Hitting the drake's feet also deals damage but, in a longer run, this tactic is not effective - damage is negligible and when you are not standing in front of the boss, he will rise up into the air and launches AoE attacks. However, if you manage to land several quick blows into the drake's head, there is a chance that this will stun him - do not wait around and dash up to land a finishing blow, then.

You can attack the boss while he is charging his weapon, but pay attention to the imminent attack. - The Nameless King - Bosses - Dark Souls III Game Guide & Walkthrough
You can attack the boss while he is charging his weapon, but pay attention to the imminent attack.

Unfortunately, defeating the drake does not do the job. This is only the first part of the battle. The actual Nameless King starts the second part after you kill his pet. It has already been mentioned that you will use a decent shield for the battle, as much as lots of energy and protection against lightning. The Nameless King lands quite a few standard attacks (swipes), and he can also impale you with his weapon (thrust). Also, he can charge at you, time and again. Also, you should watch out for the attack for which he charges his weapon (it glows with brighter and brighter light) - if you do not get away or dodge, lightning bolts shooting from above will drop on your position. They can knock you down (perform a dodge a fraction of second after the boss rises his weapon up into the air and you spot a gleam - otherwise you will come prematurely). Another attack that is especially attention worthy is the moment at which the bosses raises the weapon above his head. You should prepare then for a powerful slam before which you have to perform a perfect dodge, or get away to a safe distance.

Summoning other characters before the battle will allow you a moments rest. - The Nameless King - Bosses - Dark Souls III Game Guide & Walkthrough
Summoning other characters before the battle will allow you a moment's rest.

In the second phase, wait for opportunities to strike especially after the boss's thrust. Dodging properly will then allow you to land 2-3 blows into his back. Focus mainly on dodging and do not -try to land too many attacks at a time. Dash towards the enemy, dodge, attack 1-2 times and watch out for the incoming attack. The boss can also charge at you in the air. Make sure that your camera is locked on him, which will prevent him from escaping out of your vision and striking from behind. During the battle, you have to prepare for dodging. Blocking attacks is also possible, but block only when it is necessary, because it will quickly drain your health. The battle with The Nameless King is one of the most demanding ones and you should consider summoning an NPC before the battle, who will attract his attention.
