Yhorm the Giant Dark Souls III Guide

The weapon that makes the battle easier is lying near the throne of the giant.

Note: If until now you followed Siegward's quest, saved him and talked with him during every occasion, he will appear with you on the arena (he doesn't have a sign, he will automatically join the battle). This makes the duel much easier since the onion knight has a weapon that deals large number of damage to Yhorm.

Yhorm the Giant is... a giant, so fighting him, despite his size, is similar as fighting other giants. During most of the time you must remain under his legs and attack his ankles, avoid the swings and machete hits. A light armor will be useful since his attacks are so powerful that only a well performed dodge will save you from damage. Yhorm is vulnerable to lightning attacks.

Fight Yhorm using same tactics as against any other giants. - Yhorm the Giant - Bosses - Dark Souls III Game Guide & Walkthrough

The boss uses various powerful attacks which are able to destroy the columns on the arena - hiding behind them won't help you avoid taking damage. The head and hands of the boss are slightly more vulnerable than the ankles, but it is much harder to hit them without risking damage. Don't run too far away from the boss because Yhorm is able to change position very quickly and the reach of his weapon is enough to hit you even from the other half of the arena. One of the tactics for this battle is to run between the legs of the boss and to attack his ankles. It is a time consuming and tiring way since Yhorm is quite resistant to this attack type.

Use the Storm Ruler and its special attack.

A better way, dedicated for this battle, is to use a special weapon - the Storm Ruler. Siegward has one of these and he will use it during the battle with Yhorm. In order to obtain another one of these weapons, at the beginning of the battle quickly bypass the boss and run towards his throne - the weapon is lying on the ground. After obtaining it your tactics should change a bit - the Storm Ruler has a special ability that allows you to deal great damage to the boss (5-7 hits are enough to defeat him). The only impediment is the time needed for preparing the ability - you can't use the shield and hold the weapon in both hands, then use a proper stance and wait for the weapon to start glowing. This will mean that the attack is prepared. You don't need to use it immediately, the weapon will be glowing for some time, allowing you to perform a dodge and attack at right time. Just make sure that Yhorm isn't far away and that the special attack, a white whirl, will hit him. After this hit Yhorm will fall to his kneel and you will have few seconds to prepare another attack. This method allows you to kill him much faster - just remember about dodging, preparing the attack and unleashing it at right time.

The second phase of the battle consists mostly of same attacks, but Yhorm becomes stronger. - Yhorm the Giant - Bosses - Dark Souls III Game Guide & Walkthrough
The second phase of the battle consists mostly of same attacks, but Yhorm becomes stronger.

In the second phase of the battle Yhorm will attack you using the same pattern. Additional fire damage dealt by him will be a novelty. If you are fighting him together with Siegward or someone else, attack when the boss is focused on your ally. Creating the whirl with the Storm Ruler is the most effective way to defeat the opponent. If you have trouble with preparing the attack (it is best to do it when the enemy will hit the ground with his machete and you're behind his back), run between his legs in the regular way. The damage you deal to his ankles will be much lower, but it will be easier for you to avoid his attacks. You can also combine both tactics and hit with the special whirl when you have the best opportunity for doing that.

Note: If you leave Siegward without helping him, he might die during this battle. He won't be reborn when you repeat, but you will find here his full armor, shield and another Storm Ruler.

Reward: Cinders of a Lord, Soul of Yhorm the Giant, 25 000 souls
